There are lots of reasons why customers are choosing to buy handmade, but the best reasons to buy handmade are these:

1. Buying handmade supports traditional arts. Throughout history artisans and crafters have developed methods and techniques to make items that are useful for everyday living beautiful and unique. Buying handmade supports the continuance of those arts. Without a market for handmade goods some artistic techniques that have been around for thousands of years might die out.

2. Buying handmade means buying one of a kind. In today’s culture that has a relentless focus on uniformity buying handmade items helps you stand out from the pack and express your unique personality with one of a kind pieces of art and clothing. If you are comfortable with who you are and like being different from everyone else than buying handmade one of a kind items is definitely for you.

3. Buying handmade means buying higher quality. If you buy handmade items from a highly skilled artisan or high end crafter the item that you buy will almost always be of much higher quality than something you can get at the local discount store that was mass produced. Handmade items are made with high end materials and carefully crafted so that they will last and stay beautiful for a long time.

4. Buying handmade supports small businesses. Since most artisans and crafters use unique or not mass produced materials that are made by another artisan or crafter when you buy handmade products you’re not only giving money to the artist but also to all the other artists that create the supplies to make that product. Paying more for a handmade item is really an investment because you are helping to support several artists.

5. Buying handmade makes a statement. Making a conscious choice to buy handmade products instead of mass produced ones says that things like quality, craftsmanship, and supporting small businesses instead of big retail businesses matters to you. When you buy handmade you are using your dollars to tell stores like Wal Mart that not every consumer can be seduced by the lowest price.

Shop handmade online, it’s easier! Buying handmade online is the most popular way to shop handmade. HandmadeShoppingDirectory.com – Top site for 1000’s of Fabulous Handmade & Arts & Crafts, shops & stores.
Paper crafts are a very creative way of designing your houses and offices. There have been thousands or millions of paper craft products available throughout the world. Paper crafts have so many uses in our lives now. They are not just for decorations. They can also be used as a gift. There are many types of papers. They have different characteristics that make them appropriate for a certain project over another.

First is the watercolor paper. It was developed in 1750s by James Whatman. He created a wire cloth first used in printing. He observed that this material is easily damaged when wet. To improve, he used an alum-gelatin for watercolor paper. However, this invention had problems with acidity.

Later on, Strathmore developed watercolor paper made of pure cotton. Nowadays, watercolor paper comes in different sizes and in only three variations. These are cold press, hot press and rough finish. Cold press is ideal for beginners. It has a semi rough finish. The hot press have smooth vellum surface. The rough finish is less expensive. Its use may be effective with acrylic, pastels and paint stick.

Second kind of paper is drawing papers. They are permeable to graphite and durable to erasures. It should have not blot ink and it should absorb color freely. This kind of paper is grouped into five basic groups: bond paper, bristol, charcoal and pastel, graphics paper and sketching. Bond paper has ledger or layout bond. It is like a Bristol with vellum finish.

Bristol is the most durable and strongest drawing paper. It is for all purpose of drawing. It may come in plate or vellum finishes. Charcoal and pastel can be interchangeable. Its two finishes are laid and irregular. Graphics paper is sold as rag bonds. They are called translucent to bright white paper.

A print paper has a softer surface. It is easier to manipulate it to different shapes and sizes. It is good to use for origami or paper-folding art. Most print papers are mass produced in paper factories, while some are molded. The more expensive print papers, and also the better kind, are the handmade ones. This involves a more painstaking process, and each paper turns out unique from the rest of the stack.

Visualizing papers are transparent, like non-rag, graphic and rag tracing papers. It is laid on top of a design for copying. The transparent or translucent characteristic sees through the design well. This is most often used by engineers and drafters. But it is also commonly used in paper crafts for various tracing purposes. Visualizing papers can also be used to overlay a design for a more elegant effect or discreet look. It can also create an element of surprise.

If you choose the right combination, you can walk away with spectacular looking pieces at relatively inexpensive prices. The issue becomes knowing if you are buying good quality handmade gemstone jewelry or not. The best way to know that is to understand how it’s made so you can understand what to look for when shopping.

1. Gemstones: Nobody is going to take your ear and put it under a microscope to check out if your gemstones are real or not, but do keep in mind that there are “real” gemstones that are very bad quality. That means that you can buy gemstone earrings that look very bad. Don’t be fooled by the word gemstone. Take a look at the quality.

2. Silver. Beware on the word silver. Unfortunately, many times we’ve seen people using the word silver to describe color not the actual type of metal. So it’s possible that you think you are buying silver, but are buying a silver colored metal. It’s important to carefully read product descriptions.

3. If you recall, one of the steps to making your handmade gemstone jewelry was to file off the ends of your wire. If you are shopping in a store, you should run your fingers along the edges of the wire and make sure it’s well filed so that it’s not sharp and doesn’t catch on any of your clothes.

4. Take a look at the loops on the bottom of the earring wire. Make sure they are closed well. If not, chances are that your earrings will come apart. You would be amazed at what little force or movement it takes for the head pin to come off of the earring wire.

5. Check the head pin. The head pin holds the gemstones onto the wire with a little flat part on the end. If the “head” part of the head pin is thin or worn, then you run the chance of having the gemstones slide off. You should run your finger nail against the flat part of the head pin. If you see that it bends or cracks off then do not purchase them. If they are already weak or brittle, then you can only imagine what will happen.

In the late 19th century a design reform and social movement “The Arts and Crafts movement” was coined. These activities are called crafts because originally many of them were professions under the guild system. The Industrial Revolution and the increasing mechanisation of production processes gradually reduced or eliminated many of the roles professional craftspeople played, and today ‘crafts’ are most commonly seen as a form of hobby or art. They look hard but they are actually an easy craft project to make.

<!--
google_ad_client = "pub-1420798661618895";

Some crafts have been practised for centuries, while others are modern inventions, or popularisations of crafts which were originally practised in a very small geographic area. These activities are called crafts because originally many of them were professions under the guild system. Most crafts require a combination of skill, speed, and patience, but they can also be learnt on a more basic level by virtually anyone.

Anything that uses a needle for construction can be called needlework. Needlework is a term applied to two classes of handcraft involving fabrics. Embroidery was being done long before its name was derived, by way of medieval French from the Anglo-Saxon word for “edge. The first, embroidery, is the embellishment of a fabric by designs worked in thread with a needle. Some embroidery techniques produce a basically flat surface; others produce designs in relief.

Antique crochet has enormous character which is displayed in various forms and styles and so antique patterns are sought after by those looking to recreate classic items from a past era. Fortunately there were a lot of books, magazines and patterns published between 1850 and 1950 that have preserved the diversity of crochet creations that represent the peak period of this craft.

Tapestry art was even thought to have covered the walls of the Parthenon. Tapestry crochet is relatively easy and inexpensive; a perfect vehicle to the introduction of fiber art. Tapestry crochet is the art of crocheting with different colored strands of yarn while carrying the yarn, produces woven-like results. Fine Art Great works of art are sometimes reproduced as wall tapestries. These beautiful tapestries have a distinct and extraordinary quality.

Have you ever wondered what Tatting was? Tatting is a form of lace making made up of knots, which are done over a carrier thread. Tatting is a type of knotted lace. Tatting is made up of knotted rings and chains. Two shuttles are used in tatting when the little rings are not to be connected together at the bottom by a thread, when you want to hide the passage of the thread to another group of knots and when threads of several colours are used. Today antique tatting shuttles are highly collectible, as are old patterns and bits of lace.

Handmade pottery is one of the oldest crafts known to man with the earliest artistic pottery dating back to 25,000 B.C. give or take a few centuries. The first Pottery crafted for functional purposes, handmade pottery vessels, were used to hold water. All of the ancient pottery dating back before about 3,000 to 4,000 B.C. would have been hand carved pottery, meaning that it was formed or molded all by hand in a stationary manner. We know this because the first Pottery Wheel was not invented until about this time. The invention of the first Pottery wheel significantly changed how pottery was created and the new process know as ‘hand thrown’ created new pottery forms in many round, symmetrical and interesting shapes. Vases, bowls and cups for drinking could now be created more easily and in a more uniformed manner. Archaeologist have unearthed enough antique pottery to be able to understand the technology and skill level possessed by ancient potters.

The act of hand crafting pottery continues to be practiced today by hundreds of thousands of potters across the globe. Handmade Pottery is made for both functional purposes and for artistic expression. There are hundreds of styles and techniques available to modern day potters but they all follow the same general steps of handcrafted and hand thrown pottery. And of course because some pottery, such as Polish Pottery or Polish Stoneware, is hand painted even uniformed pottery of similar shapes and sizes can have a unique appearance. Though some modern day potters may use an electric pottery wheel as opposed to a kick wheel or manual potter’s wheel the basic steps of how to make pottery have not changed in hundreds of years.

Pottery is first thrown on the wheel (or hand shaped), then fired at extremely high temperatures exceeding 1,500 degrees. The first firing removes water and makes the piece retain its shape, the color of the pottery at this time is dependent on the clay and the kiln temperature. The second firing incorporates a glaze that is usually unique and often a closely guarded secret of the particular potter. Most pottery that is painted is done so between the 2 firings. The truly unique and beautiful colors of many handmade pottery pieces are dependent on many factors including the type of clay used which is often tied to a geographic area. Polish pottery and stoneware from the Bolshevik city of Poland for instance is famous for its white clay. Atlanta in the US is known for its vibrant red clay. The source Clay and the types of glazes and methods for applying and also other substances used in the firing process such as sawdust, sand, etc., help to determine the uniqueness of handcrafted pottery.

This type of ornamental arts where small tiles of stones and marbles are used to develop patterns and pictures appeared randomly in totally different cultures and locations.

Mosaic is a form of tiling that is usually used in showers and on floors to add a lot of color and style to the room. Mosaics can be found in a large number of textures, colors, layouts and shapes so that if required, you could customize every room in the house. Not only are they are a form of tiling, they are sometimes even considered works of art, called mosaic art.

Most mosaic tiles come with ridges on the backside so that glue can bond more securely to the tile. Nearly all types of glass, stone and ceramic material can be considered as a mosaic tile. The vitreous-glass mosaic tile is a glassy stone-like material that is opaque, not clear, and is not as sharp as regular glass when cut. It is better to use mosaic supplies like mosaic glass cutters for cutting glass mosaic tiles; regular tile nippers may cut the tile but not as predictably as with a mosaic glass cutter. Ceramic mosaic tiles are popularly used for architectural applications, as they are quite cheap and can be easily cut using regular tile nippers.

Sometimes, broken pieces of china and other types of dinnerware are used as mosaics, but as this ceramic dinnerware is engineered to be unbreakable, the plates produce razor edges when broken. Some of the mosaic tiles come attached to fiberglass mesh that keeps the tiles arranged in a grid. This mesh is then glued directly to the floor to be tiled. If you need to remove the mesh to get loose tile, the tile has to be soaked in warm water and the tiles fall off the mesh.

Mosaic tiles are not only used for flooring; they are also used to produce pieces of mosaic art that can be used for display. Mosaic tables make a great piece of furniture, with a tabletop made of mosaic tiles. Pools are the greatest source of use of mosaic art, with mosaic used in different mosaic patterns on the bottom and edges of the pool.

Craft Malls have become very popular in the crafters community. Craft Malls make it easy for the crafter to open an internet store and have their handcrafted goods available for sale worldwide in a matter of hours.

An online presence can greatly benefit any type of crafter in today’s global market. A presence on the internet is essentially like having a store open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, no waiting between those seasonal craft shows that happen just two or three times a year.

An online store gives new creditably to the crafter as a legitimate business, because now their customers can go to their online store to shop for birthday gifts, valentine gifts, mother’s day gifts, father’s day gifts etc. without having to wait for the next craft show. Their customers can also easily contact them if there is something they need that is not in their online store.

Some crafters are overwhelmed at the thought of having a web site. Hiring a web designer to build their store with ecommerce capabilities, hosting, managing and promoting their web site can be very expensive, and there are also other issues like security, merchant accounts etc.

But there is another option. Join an online crafters’ mall. In a good crafters’ mall the crafter/artisan will have their own store front. They will have a control panel where they can easily add their own product, product descriptions, taxes and shipping charges, they will take care of all their own orders, and they will not pay commissions on their sales.

In paper crafts, you may have to rely quite a bit on layouts. This does make things much simpler during the creation process, but as you go along, it does get a bit confusing as you come up with more and more layouts. You must organize them as you go along or it will pile up into a complete mess. However, this is as simple as paper crafts can get since using templates and layouts is less on the labor and more on the imagination. It is not how pretty each layout is, but how they are all put together.

There are a few things that you can do that involve layouts as a starter. You can get some ideas from magazines and newspapers, for example. The colors and typefaces used for each layout is important to create a look and feel that is unique in itself and pleasing to the eye. However, it is not recommended to tear the pages of a magazine as it relies on the magazine itself to integrate its layout and concept with everything else. Once you do tear it from the rest, it becomes different. Maybe you would want that in some cases, but it’s not always recommended to do so.

A good tip is to actually catalogue the magazines for yourself just so that you can have an index of the layouts that you like without having to tear every page apart. You can have cards that details the name of the magazine, the issue date, which pages a particular layout is on, a description of the layout, and what parts of that layout you like. This is so that you don’t have to flip through the magazines every time you want a reference.

What this is about is showing people that even without much coveted artistic ability, there is still some way to create crafts and actually express yourself. Maybe after some time and with lots of practice, you can get really good at it and even progress to other crafts. Remember that it is not just about the destination, but about the journey as well.

You might escape wearing a duplicate branded garment but keen eyes can easily make out the difference between fake and authentic ones. Imitation jewelry might look good but they are completely outshone in the presence of uniquely handcrafted artisan jewelry.

Every piece of handcrafted jewelry is individually crafted by the artisan. This lends individuality to the ornamental piece, which is essentially lacking in other machine-made pieces. Since the effort invested in crafting these pieces is more, the prices are on the higher side. Hence your choice of the handcrafted jewelry must match your needs and personality.

The funkier kinds have lots on offer. You can choose a bright necklace with beads in all possible odd shapes and sizes. You can also layer several handmade necklaces for an out-n- out unique look. Hand engraved artisan bracelets, or armlets made of chunky semiprecious stones or gems are just the right accessories to express your taste and individuality.

Hand-made jewelry makes excellent gifts as they express your desire to gift the person something truly one of a kind! Purchasing handcrafted artisan jewelry ensures that you bid for the highest quality item and design as the artist can exercise complete control over the entire process of jewelry creation. So why not buy yourself a piece of beautiful handcrafted adornment and be the cynosure of all eyes!

Modern glass art has become well known and respected in its own right as an artform. Although Seattle has become an area which has gained a high reputation for the art and has a great many top glass artists resident, Murano in Italy will probably always been know as its home. Glass blowing was originally developed by the Romans and the years of expertise that the Venetians have dedicated to the art are still held in high regard and have provided a strong foundation for young artists to build on.

Working with glass as a medium is not restricted entirely to glass blowing. Although this is perhaps the best known of the modern glass art disciplines there are others which must be considered. Stained glass is a very old artform, one which I am sure you have seen in many church windows. However, it has taken on an altogether different and much more modern character now and can often be seen used for light shades, house windows and some purely decorative pieces. Glass casting is now being used in art as is fusing and lampworking. Some of the most stunning and visually attractive pieces are, however, usually the work of the glass blowing artists. These seem to be getting more and more intricate and complex and the depth of colour more intense.

With the medium of glass being so open to individual interpretation, you cannot possibly pigeon hole the artists or their artforms. Some will favour glass blowing and some of these will specialise in pure and unblemished perfection. Others will opt for a more quirky approach which will result in colourful, avant garde pieces. Modern glass art will never stand still and become mundane as there is always someone around the corner who will come up with a new idea or a different slant on an old idea.

Some pieces of this wonderful art are currently selling for thousands of dollars. If you bear in mind the fact that glass is, by its very nature, sometimes easily damaged, you would be brave to consider spending this amount of money. The beauty and wonderful mystical quality of a piece is easily ruined if the children decide to practice soccer in the living room. Modern glass art is definitely for the grown-ups.
